Term Programs

Drum Effect delivers 8-week African drumming programs within ACT and NSW primary schools. Program teacher, Kate Gascoyne, is a qualified teacher who thrives on using music to engage students. The program involves groups of up to 35 students in a series of music-making sessions during which students learn the rhythms, techniques and cultural significance of traditional West African drumming. Programs can also integrate traditional West African song and dance. High quality djembe drums and other traditional African instruments are provided at each session.

Drumming as a learning activity is ideal for engaging students who display challenging behaviour and while music is Kate's specialist area, behaviour management is her teaching strength. Effective teaching strategies combined with an energetic and highly appealing activity such as drumming results in enthusiastic students who experience success and feel empowered as they work with other students to create rhythms.

The program concludes with an exhilarating performance for the whole school community. Being a local Canberra resident, Kate is available to attend school concerts, camps, assemblies and festivals to showcase school drumming groups.

"Kate's enthusiasm, tremendous teaching skills and excellent organisation
ensured that our drumming sessions were the highlight of the week for staff
and students alike.  A must program for challenging students." - Jo Adams

Workshops and Performances

If you're not looking for a full term program, Drum Effect can visit your school for a one-off workshop or a day of consecutive workshops that each cater for different age groups - giving all of the students across the school an opportunity to engage in an interactive drumming workshop and introducing them to the music of West Africa.  All of the instruments are provided and each student will have their own drum during the session.  Workshop times can be tailored to your school's timetable.

Drum Effect can also provide whole-school performances that are highly energetic and are sure to have the school hall rocking!  Perfect if you're looking for entertainment for the next school fair.  The volume and intensity of African drumming always draws a crowd!

For Teachers

How about an interactive drumming workshop to kick start the term?  A great way to break the ice at the start of the year; refresh staff in the middle of the year; or liven up the next planning day!  Imagine the surprise when staff members turn up to the staff room only to find the room transformed into a drum circle and filled with African instruments.
